The AMC-Amsterdam Department of Psychiatry has initiated a research study in the Body Identity Integrity Disorder (BIID) and would like to inform everyone with this entity about the study and invite them to participate.

The study is led by Prof. Damiaan Denys (psychiatrist) and Prof. Raoul Hennekam (clinical geneticist). The aims of the study are outlined in short below and are merely meant to offer you global information. In case you are interested you can contact the person performing the study, Drs. Rianne Blom, and ask her for full information which will be forwarded to you by mail or e-mail (depending on how you prefer to receive this). Only after having read this more complete information you will be asked to indicate whether you would like to participate or not.

You know very well what BIID means. Probably you also know that there is no clue what might cause individuals to feel like this. The goal of the present study is to try to find this cause.

The first part of the study will be to obtain as much general information as possible about a large number of individuals with BIID. This will be done using a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be send to you by mail or you can fill in the survey on the internet, depending on your wishes. To ensure the maximal protection of your identity, questionnaire contacts through the internet will be arranged in a secure way (as in bank transfers), and mails will be send to you in white envelopes.

The second part will be a search for a gene or genes causing BIID. For this a packet to draw blood will be forwarded to you in a white envelop. We will not put in detail the reasons for the blood sampling on the forms in this packet, so your doctor won’t know that you are participating in a BIID study. This way you will be able to have the blood drawn locally, by your general physician or a local hospital, and then returned to Amsterdam. We will use the blood for the DNA studies.

Both the information from the questionnaires and the blood samples will only be used for this particular research and never be shared with others. All data will be maintained in strict confidentiality according to Dutch laws and local policies.

Please know we can not offer any guarantee that we will be successful in our studies. We can only guarantee you that we will do our utmost best that the study will become successful.

It may be you are in contact with other person(s) with BIID. We would be pleased if you would show this letter to them or forward a copy to them, asking them to participate as well. Dear All,

First of all, thanks to all who are already participating in the research project of the Academical Medical Center Amsterdam (http://www.onderzoekinformatie.nl/en/oi ... RG1238482/). However, we are still looking for more participants. I’d like to emphasize that it’s possible to only take part in the questionnaire part of the study, without the genetic part. It is possible to answer the questionnaire in your own language. As BIID is a rare condition your participation is very important to us.

I’ve noticed that some of you are tired of participating in research or waiting for treatment studies as surgery or other treatments. The AMC-Amsterdam is planning to start up these kinds of studies in the future, however to write a protocol and convince several parties to start these studies we’ll need solid neurobiological / psychological evidence. This is the reason why we started first with the background research.

Forschung nach der molekularen Basis von BllD

Die Abteilung Psychiatrie der Universitätsklinik Amsterdam (AMC) möchte hiermit bekanntgebe, dass sie mit einer Studie zum Thema Body Identity Integrity Disorder (BLLD) begonnen ist und lädt herzlichst zur Teilnahme ein.

Die Studie steht unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Damiaan Denys (psychiater) und Prof. Dr. Raoul Hennekam (klinischer Genforscher). Die Ziele der aktuellen Studie werden im Verlauf dieses Informationsbriefes grob umrissen. Bei Interesse kontaktieren Sie bitte unsere Forschungsmitarbeiterin Drs. Rianne Blom, sie wird Ihnen gerne zur Verfügung stehen und Ihnen ausführliche Informationen per Post oder E-Mail zukommen lassen. Lesen Sie bitte den Gesamten Informationsbrief damit Sie entscheiden können ob Sie für die aktuelle Studie in Anmerkung kommen.

Sie wissen sehr genau was BllD bedeutet. Wahrscheinlich wissen Sie dann auch das man bis heute im Dunkel tappt was die Ursache dafür ist das Menschen sich so fühlen. Das Ziel der aktuellen Studie ist es genau dem auf den Grund zu gehen.

Der erste Teil dieser Studie befasst sich vor allem mit der Erfassung von möglichst ausführlichen allgemeinen Informationen von Menschen mit BllD. Diese Erfassung geschieht mit Hilfe eines Fragebogens. Dieser Fragebogen kann in Ihrer Muttersprache ausgefüllt werden und kann per Post erhalten werden (ein frankierter Rückumschlag liegt dem Fragebogen bei). Der Fragebogen und eventuelle weitere Korrespondenz werden in einem neutralen weißen Umschlag versendet. Optional können Sie den Fragebogen auch im Internet ausfüllen. Um sicher zu stellen dass Ihre persönlichen Daten während der Befragung im Internet anonym bleiben, wurde speziell für diese Studie, eine verschlüsselte Internetseite eingerichtet (ähnlich wie beim Onlinebanking).

Der zweite Teil der Studie befasst sich mit der Suche nach einem oder mehreren Genen die BllD verursachen. Hierfür wird Ihnen ein Bündel zur Blutabnahme geschickt (ebenfalls in einem neutralen weißen Umschlag). Der Grund für die Blutprobe wird weder aus der Verpackung noch aus dem beigelegten Brief an Ihren Arzt ersichtlich sein. Niemand außer Ihnen wird wissen wozu die Blutprobe im Detail verwendet wird. Auf diese Art und Weise wird es Ihnen möglich sein die Blutabnahme bei Ihrem Hausarzt oder im örtlichen Krankenhaus durchzuführen. Nach der Blutabnahme schicken Sie die Blutprobe dann einfach im beigelegten Rückumschlag an das Universitätsklinikum Amsterdam.

Sowohl die Informationen aus dem Fragebogen als auch die Blutprobe wird streng vertraulich behandelt und nur im Zuge der aktuellen Studie verwendet. In keinem Fall werden Ihre Daten mit anderen Personen geteilt. Alle persönlichen Informationen unterliegen hierbei den Niederländischen Datenschutzgesetzen und lokalen Richtlinien.

Bitte beachten Sie, dass auch wenn wir unser möglichstes tun um Ihre Daten Geheim zu halten, wir natürlich keine Garantie geben können das dieses Versprechen eingehalten wird. Wir Garantieren Ihnen allerdings das wir unser bestes geben werden um diese Studie erfolgreich zu gestalten.

Es ist auch möglich teil zu nehmen in nur Die Fragebogenstudie (online). Die fragen sind in English, aber Die Responses mögen Sie geben auf Deutsch. Sie mögen anonyme bleiben in Die Studie.
